What Tire Rotation Pattern Should You Use?

Mechanic with Tires

Whether you’ve recently purchased a new or pre-owned Mercedes-Benz, or you’ve been a long-term Mercedes-Benz driver, you understand how crucial it is to keep up with your vehicle’s service schedule. One of these core maintenance tasks that help your vehicle perform smoothly on White Plains roads is a tire rotation. Rotating tires is a fairly simple process that should be done every six months of 6,000 miles to sustain and further the lifespan of your tires.

However, there is a specific tire rotation pattern that you need to follow. What tire rotation pattern should you use for your Mercedes-Benz? It all depends on your vehicle’s drivetrain and what type of tires you have. Read learn more about proper tire rotation with Mercedes-Benz of White Plains!

How to Rotate Tires

Scarsdale drivers often have many questions regarding tire rotations such as, “What exactly does rotating tires do?” When rotating your tires, you’re essentially moving the back tires to the front and vice versa. This ensures that your tires get a similar distribution of wear and tear over time. While you can always schedule a service appointment at Mercedes-Benz of White Plains and our certified technicians can rotate your tires for you, if you’d like to complete this service on your own, you’ll need to do it properly by following a pattern.

What is the Proper Tire Rotation Pattern?

The type of model you have will impact your tire rotation pattern. There are several different patterns you should choose from when rotating your tires. These include:

  • Forward Cross: This pattern is commonly used for front-wheel drive vehicles. You take the front tires and bring them back, and bring the back tires forward. When doing this, though, be sure to take the rear left tire and put it on the front right side, and bring the right rear tire forward to the left front side. The front tires that move back can stay on their respective sides.
  • X-Pattern: Similar to the forward cross, you take the front tires and switch sides when bringing them to the rear, as well. This tire rotation pattern also works for front-wheel drive cars.
  • Rearward Cross: This pattern is the opposite of the forward cross, and best suited for rear- and four-wheel drive vehicles. You bring the front tires to the rear and the rear to the front, all the while switching sides of the front tires when bringing them back. So, the front right tire now becomes the left rear tire, and the left front tire becomes the right rear tire. Just like the forward cross pattern, you need not switch sides for the rear tires that move forward.

Directional vs. Non-Directional Tires

Before starting the tire rotation process, Purchase drivers should know whether or not their tires are directional. Tires that are made with a one-way pattern are made specifically for either the left or right side of a vehicle. You can determine if your tires are directional or not by checking the tire’s sidewall where you’ll find an arrow or triangle marking. These symbols will tell you which side of the vehicle the tire should be on, as well as the direction the wheel should turn. What tire rotation pattern should you use for directional vs. non-directional tires? Here are your options:

  • Directional Tires: swap the front right tire with the rear right tire, and the front left tire with the rear left tire.
  • Non-Directional Tires: You can swap your tires in any direction and leave them on any side. With non-directional tires, you may want to use the X-pattern for the best results!
