The Proper Way to Jump-Start a Car

Here’s how to properly jump start a car. Thankfully, the process of how to jump start a car is not a very difficult one and you can do it from the side of the road or the parking lot safely if you’ve got another driver with a live battery. Purchase drivers will need another person, another vehicle, and a set of jumper cables. This is how it goes:

  1. Have the two vehicles face each other. Most vehicles have batteries in the engines, meaning you’ll go hood to hood. Turn the vehicles off and set the parking brakes.
  2. Get access to the batteries. You might have to take off a plastic hood to expose the battery terminals.
  3. Find the positive and negative battery terminals and make sure they don’t have any dirt or corrosion on them.
  4. Separate the red ends of the cables from the black ones. You don’t want them to touch under any circumstances because they could spark or short. Connect the red clamp to the positive (+) post on the dead battery.
  5. Uncoil the battery cable and hook the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the live battery.
  6. Connect the black clamp to the negative post on the good battery.
  7. Connect the next black clamp to a grounded and unpainted metal surface on the frame of your car.
  8. After you’ve got everything hooked up securely, start the engine of the vehicle with the good battery. You should wait a few minutes for the car with the good battery to run, then try starting the engine of the vehicle with the dead battery.
  9. After the dead vehicle has been successfully jump started, take the jumper cables off in the reverse order of how you put them on. Keep the other vehicle running.
  10. Have the restarted engine run for at least 10 minutes to ensure that the weak battery doesn’t die again right away. Consult your owner’s manual for more info on the right amount of time. You should also get your Armonk battery tested ASAP.
