Hand removing cabin air filter

Every vehicle in the Scarsdale area has a cabin air filter, but what does a cabin air filter do, how much does a cabin air filter cost, and what do you need to know? Learn how often to change cabin air filters and more from the team at the Mercedes-Benz of White Plains service center

What Does a Cabin Air Filter Do?

If you’ve never heard of a cabin air filter, then you may be asking, “What does a cabin air filter do?” It’s name is fairly self explanatory. Positioned in the ventilation, heating, and air conditioning systems in your vehicle, a cabin air filter collects dirt, dust, pollen, and other small contaminants as they blow through your vents. With time, the cabin air filter becomes clogged.

When Should I Change My Cabin Air Filter

The rule of thumb for how often to change cabin air filters is every 15,000 miles. Some Purchase drivers encounter scenarios where their air filter works harder such as when going off-roading or when driving in locations with dirt or gravel roads. In these cases, you’ll need to change your air filter sooner. These signs indicate your filter needs to be changed:

  1. Reduced air flow from vents when climate control systems are on
  2. Unpleasant odors that linger for multiple days
  3. Dust settling on the interior of your vehicle

How Much Does a Cabin Air Filter Cost?

Your cabin air filter will vary depending on what model vehicle you have, and some models have more than one filter! So, how much does a cabin air filter cost? It can vary from $30 to $70, but if your vehicle is still under warranty, then some or all of the cost could be covered.

How To Change a Cabin Air Filter

Any driver in the Armonk area or beyond can learn how to change a cabin air filter. It does take time and will require some tools. Your owner’s manual will contain specifics on its location and what tools you’ll need to replace it. Once you’re ready, follow these steps:

  1. Locate your cabin air filter(s). Some vehicles will have multiple.
  2. Use the appropriate tools to remove its casing.
  3. Put a towel on the ground near where your air filter is to catch any debris. Then, remove the filter.
  4. Note the position of the old air filter and the direction of airflow. The airflow indicator is on the underside of the filter. This information is essential to correctly position the replacement.
  5. Throw away the old filter, and use a vacuum to clean any left over debris. Remove dust from the filter casing and housing.
  6. Install the new cabin air filter. Use the information you noted earlier to position it correctly.
  7. Replace the air filter cover and casing.

This can be a troublesome and time consuming process, so if you would rather an expert do it for you, schedule a service appointment with us.
